China is among the world leaders in producing CCTV cameras.

This year alone, mainland-based manufacturers will ramp up their output by 10 percent to 18.15 million units despite rising raw materials and labor costs and challenges with the appreciating yuan against the US dollar.

They are boosting their production capacity to meet the demands of the high-end market, as well as the North America and European markets.

Executive Summary:

CCTV camera makers in China face a number of challenges, such as the appreciation of the yuan against the US dollar, rising labor cost and high raw material cost, in 2008.

To minimize the impact of US dollar conversion, some China suppliers are beginning to quote their export prices in non-US dollar currencies. For US-based customers, makers are offering export quotes with shorter-term validity. Some suppliers, particularly small- and medium-sized enterprises, are shifting their focus to the domestic market to reduce their exposure to export risks.

The increase in the cost of raw materials such as fuel, steel and copper, combined with about 5 percent rise in labor cost, is compelling many makers to raise their prices.

However, the cost of some key components, including encoding processors and high-power IR LEDs, may decline in 2008. This could allow makers of high-end CCTV cameras to decrease quotes, although any downward revision will be minimal due to the fierce price competition in the industry.

Given these challenges, the industry is predicted to undergo a period of consolidation, which puts pressure on suppliers that do not actively seek to expand their market reach.

In response, manufacturers with strong product development capability are focusing on the high-end market where margins are more favorable. Makers are also strengthening their manufacturing capability by optimizing the supply chain, introducing advance management systems, improving production processes and expanding their product range.

The following are some of the key trends that we see in China's CCTV camera industry:

- Spurred by the boost in manufacturing capability, China makers' CCTV camera output is expected to increase by about 10 percent in 2008. The bulk of this output will be exported to OEM/ODM clients.

- North America and Europe will continue to be major export markets.

- Suppliers have mixed forecast on prices: an almost equal split of suppliers have indicated that they will increase/decrease export quotes, while a smaller number of makers will maintain their current pricing.

- Integration of IP technology, longer IR distance, enhanced illumination and intelligent functions will dominate product development in the coming months.

- IP and speed dome CCTV cameras will be the major product trends as more makers expand to these lines for better profits. More wireless models are also expected to be released, particularly for camera kits and baby monitors.
