Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia’s most promising emerging economies, with its GDP growing by more than 8% for a third consecutive year. Its accession to the WTO in January 2007, has also led to both growth and market-oriented reforms resulting in strong domestic demand. These have contributed to a 16% growth in investments to reach 40.4% of GDP, one of the highest rates in Asia.
Vietnam's membership in the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and entry into force of the US-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement in December 2001 has also led to even more rapid changes in Vietnam's trade and economic regime. Vietnam's major investors and trade partners include Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Republic of Korea and Singapore.
Singapore was Vietnam’s 2nd largest foreign investor in 2006. Key sectors of investment by Singapore companies include infrastructure, heathcare services, education services, Infocomms technology as well as light manufacturing. Notwithstanding its growth potential, Vietnam remains a challenging business environment. Complexities in the regulatory environment, bureaucracy as well as its decentralisation policies, may make navigating through the market a challenge. Vietnam's strong growth and its difficult operating environment represents a unique market to Singapore companies, compared to the rest of South-east Asia.
